EPICUR: Intercultural Competence
Tabs
Welcome to "Intercultural Competence"!
Dear EPICUR-Students
I am delighted that you are here and I promise you that by the end of this course you will have had at least 2, maybe even 3 "aha" moments.
Let me first give you a few organizational tips:
Learning Modules:
The course is divided into 13 learning modules. In these learning modules we give you a brief overview in lecture videos, you will find books, reading texts, tasks for video analysis, invitations to discussions and you will create short documents with your results, upload them and reflect on them with others. Many learning modules end with a short multiple choice test so that you can test your acquired knowledge.

Basic + Professional-Course:
This Moodle-course contains both: The Basic and the Professional Module. Each module needs some 16 hours workload. The Basic Module finishes with a Media Analysis, the Professional Module with a Culture Exploration.
Please make sure to
(A) work yourself through the content,
(B) contribute and upload to forums,
(C) pass the multiple-choice tests,
(D) submit your paper until February 7th, 2025 and
(E) attend our online videoconference.
Time Management:
When doing activities on the computer/tablet/notebook or cell phone, we tend to make two mistakes:
- We underestimate the time required and
- we are easily distracted by other open windows. Therefore, plan fixed learning times - i.e. a timetable - and close all other windows on your device.

Basic Knowledge, Deeper Understanding and ICC-Nerd-level:
The tasks in the learning modules are marked and contain information on the required reading or watching time. You need basic knowledge tasks in order to be able to understand the topic. Deeper understanding tasks are intended to help your engagement with the topic lead to sustainable learning success and skills development. They repetition and deepening will help you to transfer information from your short-term to your long-term memory. One repetition within 24 hours, a second repetition within 7 days are the basic rule. Tasks and information marked "Congrats, ICC-Nerd!" are intended to help interested students to delve even deeper into the topics.
Access to the Platform / Learning Diary:
Your access to this platform will remain available even after you have completed your course. Please double-check with your trainer, how long the platform will be available to you. Nevertheless, we recommend you to document your selected content in a learning diary or portfolio. The idea behind this recommendation mainly has to do with learner autonomy, which as a learning concept helps you to build up new knowledge and new skills independently.
Commenting and Reflecting:
The quality of your learning experience depends very much on the depth with which you approach the topics. Please comment a lot in forums thereby support yourself and others in learning.
Questions, Difficulties, Thematic Questions:
Your course will be supervised by your trainer, which means that I am available to answer any questions you may have. Take advantage of this! ( kontakt@holger-witzenleiter.de ) The speed of response is a kind of "currency" on the internet, today. I will therefore try to answer you within 24 hours if possible, but cannot promise this for the entire course period.
Face-to-Face-Class plus asychronic Online-Learning - Advantages:
This Blended Learning Course includs both, face-to-face (for some in a video conference) and online-learning. We take the best of both worlds: In face-to-face sessions we learn emotionally and affectively using simulations, role plays, group work and discussions. In your online self-studies you will gather information and knowledge precicly at the time you are ready for it.
However, online-learning does not necessarily mean learning alone in front of your device. You are most welcome to form learning groups to meet other participants for your online studies.
Despite the long time I have been working in this field, intercultural competence remains an incredibly interesting topic for me. On the one hand, it is an engagement with our own identity and culture, and on the other hand, no one can ever "finish learning", "know everything" or "be done with it". We never stop learning and so I myself am constantly learning more in these courses and through your examples, discussion contributions and analyses. This is why the course is designed in a way that you can always go one level deeper and find answers to questions that are of great interest to you.
I hope you and we have lots of fun and interesting learning experiences!
Best regards
Holger Witzenleiter
