8.3 Cultural Dimension of Individualism & Collectivism

1. Individualism & Collectivism - Definition

Individualistic representation of the "I"; Picture by: Andrea Witzenleiter

Individualism describes societies in which the bonds between individuals are loose: everyone is even expected to take care of themselves and their own immediate family.

Collectivism describes societies in which people are integrated from birth into strong, closed we-groups that protect them throughout their lives and demand loyalty in return.
